Supporting the development of Serbia’s Irrigation Strategy

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management of the Republic Serbia, in cooperation with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (UN FAO), has launched a joint project to support Serbia in developing its national Irrigation Strategy with the five-year Action Plan and Investment Plan.

The objective of the project is to improve agricultural productivity by increasing irrigation capacity, and identifying and mapping priority irrigation investments in the next ten years.

Inadequate irrigation is one of the major constraints hindering the country’s transition to higher value-added crops. Increased crop yields and the expansion of cultivated areas stemming from access to irrigation water would have a positive impact on Serbia’s gross agricultural product and exports.

Measures taken by the Government in the field of improvement, expansion and modernization of irrigation infrastructure, due to the country’s growing sensitivity to the negative impact of climate change, but also due to obsolescence and insufficient investment in irrigation systems, are aimed at improving climate resilience and supporting the agricultural sector. In addition, the rehabilitation of the current irrigation system and water infrastructure is expected to contribute to savings in water and energy consumption.
